Esse Biscotti or as they are commonly known in the United States "Italian S Cookies" is cookie that is a popular breakfast treat to enjoy with your morning latte or coffee. The cookie gets it's name from the S shape it's baked in. In the USA these have also become a very popular Italian Christmas Cookie. The Italian S cookie originates from a fascinating town in Sicily called Ragusa. The cookie in flavor is similar to a sugar cookie, soft yet mildly crisp. Most often the recipe is made with a combination of vanilla and lemon, some people prefer just the vanilla flavor. I make mine with a combination of vanilla and almond - a flavor those of you familiar with Stella D'Oro's breakfast treats might recognize - yet a little different (Stella D'Oro's are far more crunchy than mine). They are traditionally enjoyed just as they are, no icing, no decorative sprinkles, but they are also very popular with a vanilla icing, I like to dress them up with some nonpareils or sprinkles - usually in colors red, white and green - which both represent the Italian Flag and are Christmas Colors.

When ordering, you get a choice of 1 dozen to 4 dozen cookies. You can also chose to get the cookies with icing, no icing, sprinkles or nonpareils - if you chose the sprinkles or nonpareils, if you want any other color than the red, white & green mix, just send me a note when you place your order.
